At City Shul, Jewish life is something we experience together. We gather to pray, learn, celebrate, mark life’s milestones, support one another, and explore what Jewish wisdom can teach us about living meaningful lives today.

Participatory
We believe Jewish life is richer when people take part.
Participation is woven throughout community life, from services and Torah reading to learning, volunteering, leadership, and social action. People are encouraged to contribute their voices, talents, and perspectives in ways that feel meaningful to them.
You don’t need to be an expert to participate. You simply need to be willing to engage.

We believe every person should be able to participate fully in Jewish life.
People of all genders are welcomed and encouraged to lead, learn, teach, celebrate, and contribute. We strive to create a community where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Jewish life can be both uplifting and meaningful.
We celebrate Shabbat and holidays with warmth, music, learning, and community. We embrace the joy that comes from gathering together while also making space for reflection, growth, and deeper exploration.

The diversity, creativity, and energy of city life shape our community and inform our perspective. We engage thoughtfully with contemporary culture, current issues, and the questions people bring from daily life.

We do not believe that Jewish life requires certainty.
Questions, exploration, and respectful disagreement have always been part of Jewish tradition. We welcome people at every stage of their Jewish journey and recognize that meaningful engagement often begins with curiosity.
Our goal is not to tell people what to think. It is to create opportunities to learn, reflect, connect, and grow together.
