About the school
Hands-on, joyful, and genuinely their own
The City Shul School is a part-time Jewish learning experience for children from JK to pre-B’Mitzvah, where children and youth explore Jewish identity, rituals, stories and questions – with the goal of empowering the next generation to make decisions about what being Jewish means to them.
We have created a curriculum that speaks directly to the heart of modern, progressive Judaism. We focus on Jewish learning for Jewish living: through Jewish deeds, ideas, questions, language, purpose, people, and living.
Students explore Judaism through a multi-faceted, experiential lens. Our school gives children the opportunity to get their hands dirty through art and music, and to experience ritual and holiday traditions with their peers. Teachers develop approachable, fun and engaging activities for children from diverse Jewish backgrounds.
Students also dive into the community around them through student-initiated projects, allowing them to experience and participate in Tikkun Olam – what it means to give back.

A curriculum that grows with them
Our curriculum nurtures a deep and personal connection to Jewish life, looking at different facets of what it means to be Jewish people who are part of the wider world. How do we think and live through a Jewish framework?
JK – Grade 3
Stories, values and holidays
Our younger students explore Jewish deeds, ideas, questions, language and prayer through Jewish stories and values, and by learning about the holidays – including several Family Education programs during Saturday morning services.

Building on the foundations
Our mid-grades build on these earlier concepts while adding learning on the Jewish life cycle, alongside weekly small-group Hebrew tutoring over Zoom.

History, memory and ritual
Grade 6 learns about Jewish stories, the Diaspora, the Holocaust, and Jewish ritual and connection – preparing the ground for the B’Mitzvah year ahead.

B’Mitzvah class
Taking ownership of the journey
As students approach their B’Mitzvah they are encouraged to take greater ownership of their Jewish journey, exploring what Judaism means to them and looking at the big Jewish questions. Beyond classroom time, the B’Mitzvah class attends workshops with Rabbi Crawley, Shabbat bonding experiences, and Tikkun Olam volunteering.

Younger students start with assembly
Each day begins with a short welcome assembly – music, prayers, and animated Jewish learning led by our Rabbi.
Older students close with prayer
Our older students end their day with a short prayer service, helping them learn the prayers and get comfortable in services.

Wednesdays at the MNJCC
City Shul School is in session on Wednesdays between 4:30 and 6:30 PM at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNJCC), located at 750 Spadina Ave., Toronto.
Getting there
The MNJCC is at the corner of Spadina Avenue and Bloor Street West, just a block from the Spadina TTC station.
Hebrew tutoring – Grades 4 to 7
Grades 4 to 7 receive additional small-group Hebrew tutoring, in groups of 1 to 3 students, over Zoom. Days and times will be released closer to the beginning of the school year. This is a required part of the curriculum, and families will be able to request a time as well as a study pair.

Beyond Wednesdays
Our younger students take part in several Family Education programs during Saturday morning services. More information about this new program will be sent out in the coming weeks.
In addition to classroom time together, the B’Mitzvah class is expected to attend experiences outside of Wednesday class time, including workshops with Rabbi Crawley, Shabbat bonding experiences, and Tikkun Olam volunteering.

Registration details
What to know before you register
City Shul membership
We offer registration for non-members in our program from JK to Grade 3. For families with students in Grade 4 to Grade 6, and in our B’Mitzvah program, families must be members of City Shul.
Refer a friend
As an existing City Shul School family, if you refer a friend to our program, $50 will be credited to each of your accounts once registration of each family is confirmed.
