A new kind of Jewish community
The founding vision for City Shul was shaped by Rabbi Elyse Goldstein and a committed group of lay leaders who believed there was an opportunity to create a new kind of Jewish community in downtown Toronto.
Together, they imagined a congregation that would lower barriers to participation while deepening engagement with Jewish life. Their vision helped establish many of the qualities that continue to define City Shul today: warmth, inclusivity, thoughtful learning, spiritual depth, and active participation.
Over the years, clergy, staff, volunteers, board members, and countless community members have continued to build on that foundation.

From the beginning, City Shul was shaped by the people who gathered around it.
Members did more than attend. They helped lead services, organize programs, host events, build traditions, welcome newcomers, and create the culture that continues to define the community today.
That spirit of shared ownership remains one of City Shul’s defining characteristics. The congregation is strengthened by active lay leadership, volunteer involvement, and a belief that Jewish life is something we create together.
